Develop writing skills through community engagement, field research, and experiential learning!

Writing Programs is offering two exciting “XP” courses in Spring 2026 for students interested in developing their writing skills through community engagement, field research, service learning, and/or experiential learning.

Eng Comp 3DX is a unique way to meet your Writing I requirement!

EC3DX:

  • Meets Writing I and Diversity GE requirements
  • Counts toward minor in Community Engagement & Social Change (CESC)
  • Enables students to develop writing skills and gain professional experience while volunteering with one of our nonprofit community partners (of the student’s choice): 826LA, LA LGBT Center, or Sage Hill
  • Is enrolling now for Sp26 (no PTE required)

Eng Comp 134XP is an opportunity to conduct field research on-campus and to translate scientific research into clear, compelling writing for public audiences.

EC134XP:

  • Includes hands-on volunteering on UCLA’s Sage Hill and remote collaboration with the USA National Phenology Network
  • Offers hands-on experience with field research, community science, and science communication.
  • Counts as an elective course for the Professional Writing Minor and Community-Engagement & Social Change Minor
  • Prepares students to communicate effectively about science with diverse publics and decision-makers.
  • Is enrolling now for Sp26 (no PTE required)

  2. How many volunteer hours are required? Up to 20 hours total across the span of the quarter (e.g., approx. 2-3 hours/week).
