Rachel Swanger took a circuitous path to Writing Programs at UCLA.  After earning a BA in History from the College of Wooster and an MA in International Economics and Japanese Studies from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), she began her career as a newspaper reporter in Tokyo covering politics and writing special features for a major Japanese media conglomerate.  Before returning to the States, she spent two years running the Tokyo office of Close-Up, a US civic education nonprofit.  Enticed to Los Angeles by a position with the RAND Corporation, a public policy research organization, she spent nearly 30 years managing programs, doing research and writing, engaging with foundations and other funders, and working with students at the RAND Graduate School where she served as associate dean.  She is delighted to share her passion for provoking people to think harder about public policy choices through clear direct writing in her classes EC130D Writing for Nonprofits and EC100W Interdisciplinary Academic Writing.
