Laila Hualpa graduated from UCLA with a PhD in Applied Linguistics in 2012. Since then, she has been a full-time lecturer for UCLA Writing Programs, teaching writing, oral communication, and language pedagogy courses. Her writing courses help international graduate students develop academic writing across genres while also building presentation skills for sharing their research with general audiences. Her oral skills courses, designed for international teaching assistants (ITAs), build the pronunciation, public speaking, and classroom communication skills ITAs need to teach effectively. She also teaches language pedagogy courses that train future instructors in course design, classroom instruction, and effective feedback. Outside the classroom, Dr. Hualpa coordinates two programs central to international students’ experience at UCLA: the Test of Oral Proficiency and the Summer ESL Program.
