Community-Engaged Writing Courses

English Composition 3SL Course

English Composition 3SL focuses on the demands of academic writing, writing process, methods of revision, and ways to write for different audiences. Service Learning (SL) is a pedagogical approach that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Students will gain hands-on experience outside the classroom while strengthening their writing and critical thinking skills. Each week students apply their academic skills to support the work of a community partner, culminating in 20 hours of service learning by the end of the quarter. In addition to discussing their experiences in class, students will analyze their service learning in at least one essay for the course.  To read more about this course, visit the ENG COMP 3SL blog.

Outreach for High School Students

Summer Writer's Workshop for College-Bound High School Students

The Summer Writer’s Workshop for College-Bound High School Students is a non-resident writing course for English-speaking high school students who seek to strengthen their writing and discussion skills. For over twenty years, UCLA Writing Programs has helped undergraduates successfully meet the challenges of a university education. Through a new, three week summer workshop, UCLA’s highly regarded writing specialists will now help college-bound students prepare for those challenges. It will address such essential tasks as the timed essay exam and the effective email. All activities will demystify the unstated differences between college and high school writing. The summer workshop will also attend to the college application process, including the application essay. This writer’s workshop is ideal for the ambitious high school student who wants to start a step ahead. Click here for more information about this program.
