Undergraduate

REQUIREMENTS FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS

First-year students must satisfy the following writing requirements:

  • Entry Level Writing Requirement (which may include an ESL requirement for students whose first language is not English)
  • Writing I

First-year students are placed into the appropriate sequence of courses to satisfy these requirements based on the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE). Depending on the results of the AWPE, an international or multilingual freshman might be held for as many as four English Composition (EC) courses.

         Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR)

Writing I

English Comp 1A
(formerly ESL 33B)

English Comp 1B
(formerly ESL 33C)

English Comp 2 or 2i

English Comp 3

* Placement determined by Analytical Writing & Placement Examination (AWPE)

As shown in the table, first-year undergraduate students with an ESL requirement move directly from 1B to 2i; for these students, English Comp 2i  satisfies both the Entry-Level Writing Requirement and the ESL requirement.

REQUIREMENTS FOR MULTILINGUAL TRANSFER STUDENTS

Transfer students have typically satisfied the Writing 1 requirement at their transfer institution (and therefore have also satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement). However, some transfer students may be held for an ESL requirement and are required to sit for the English as a Second Language Placement Exam (ESLPE). Transfer students who are required to sit for the ESLPE include 1) those who have not satisfied IGETC and 2) those held at the discretion of Transfer Admissions. Depending on the results of the ESLPE, multilingual transfer students may be held for as many as three English Composition courses in order to satisfy their ESL requirement (independent of any Writing I or II requirements):
