Raters for Test of Oral Proficiency

What is the TOP?

The Test of Oral Proficiency (TOP) is for international students who plan to work as teaching assistants at UCLA. The TOP is designed to test oral English ability in the context of normal TA duties. Students whose first language is not English must pass the TOP exam before working as a TA in any department at UCLA. The TOP is administered 4 times per academic year – September, November, February, and May. Test sessions are held in person in Powell Library or Rolfe Hall, so raters will need to be physically on campus a few days per quarter. This is not a typical part-time position. The fact that the exam is only offered over 3-4 days four times per year limits the number of hours we can offer raters each quarter. Compensation for rating is competitive: $35/hr. Training for new raters is also compensated at $20/hr.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in linguistics or teaching English as a second/foreign language
  • Previous experience rating oral exams
  • A strong command of the English language; native or near-native proficiency preferred
  • Sufficient knowledge of English grammar and phonology in order to identify and document pronunciation and grammatical errors
Mandatory Training Dates

In order to be hired, you need to be available for:

  • paid mandatory training in the Spring (dates to be determined based on general availability)
  • one day of paid additional training/onboarding in early September
  • a minimum of three exam dates usually between Sept. 11th – Sept. 20th.

More specific dates are provided in the application.
