Student placement in the UCLA Summer ESL Program is primarily self-directed. Once you have familiarized yourself with our program and our courses, we encourage you to choose the courses that you believe will be most beneficial for you. However, sometimes students may select a course that is too difficult or too fast for their individual proficiency in English. In these cases, we, as professionals, may step in and advise students of a more appropriate course for their needs. We know that these things happen, and we are prepared to assist you in any way possible to ensure that you get what you need. Just remember that there is a class for everyone, and we will find the right one for you.
The information in our placement section offers important details on our student population and on our process for ensuring that our students are enrolled in the appropriate courses for their needs. To find out more, check out the subcategories of this section, which explore our typical student profile, our diagnostic assessment, our recommendations for seeking advisement, and our guidelines for changing courses.
